Huguenot

Staten Island

Named after the Huguenots, French Protestants who settled here.

The Huguenots came to the area fleeing persecution in Catholic France and formed one of the first permanent settlements on Staten Island. The place was originally called Bloomingview, and so was the station. It was later named Huguenot Park, although there was no park nearby; the MTA shortened it to Huguenot soon after taking over the railway in 1971.
