Kingsbridge takes its name from the King’s Bridge, likely built by enslaved Africans in 1693.
The bridge was owned by Frederick Philipse, lord of Philipsburg Manor, and was part of the Boston Post Road, linking southern Westchester County, which later became the Bronx, with Marble Hill. Part of the Town of Yonkers broke off to form the Town of Kingsbridge, which New York City annexed in 1874.
