Anvers

Paris 9e, 18e

Named after the place and square d'Anvers, after the Belgian city of Antwerp.

It recalls the citadel of Antwerp, taken from the Dutch by French troops on 23 December 1832 in the Belgian–Dutch war. The place was laid out in 1868 as the place Turgot, on part of the Montmartre slaughterhouses, and renamed in 1877. Since December 2021 the square at its centre has also honoured the artist Jean-Claude Carrière (1931–2021).
