Named after the town of Charenton-le-Pont and the schools by the station.
Charenton comes from the pre-Indo-European root kal or kar, 'stone', said to be linked to stone quarrying; le Pont recalls a 7th-century bridge over the Marne. The station is subtitled Place Aristide Briand, after the square whose primary school is the oldest in the town. The name is older than the metro: around 1916 a tram already ran from République to Charenton – Écoles.
