The name recalls the Stubentor, a city gate whose name is still a puzzle.
One of the four main gates of medieval Vienna, at the end of the Wollzeile, it was first recorded in 1256 as the Ungartor (Hungarian Gate) and called Stubentor from 1342. Where that name comes from is unclear: bathhouses (‘Stuben’) are doubted, a mix-up of Latin ‘stuppa’ (flax) with ‘stuba’ (parlour, bathhouse) can be neither proved nor ruled out. In 1563 the medieval gate was replaced by a new one, largely demolished in 1858; the old outline is marked in the paving.
