Named after Tscherttegasse, which honours Johann Tscherte, builder of Vienna’s 16th-century fortifications.
The lane was named in 1940 after Johann (Hans) Tscherte (c. 1480–1552), an architect from Brno; his name is a corruption of Czech ‘čert’, devil. He was a city councillor and from 1528 master builder of the Lower Austrian lands, proved himself as a fortification expert in besieged Vienna in 1529 and was key to the new city walls from 1531. Albrecht Dürer drew his coat of arms.
