Named after Grünau, a colonists’ village ‘on the green meadow’.
Grünau was one of the colonists’ villages founded under Frederick II. In 1749 its first four families, from the Palatinate, called it Auff der Grünen Aue, ‘on the green meadow’. The station opened in 1866 with the Görlitz railway; it was called Grünau (Mark) from 1911 and Berlin-Grünau from 1929.
