Named after Charles Darwin (1809–1882), English naturalist.
Darwin spent five years, from 1831 to 1836, on the voyage of the Beagle. The wildlife and fossils he collected on it led him to his theory of natural selection. He published his theory of evolution in 1859 in 'On the Origin of Species'; it is the basis of the modern theory of evolution.
