Heinestraße

Leopoldstadt

Named after the German poet Heinrich Heine.

Joseph II had this avenue laid out in 1781 between the Augarten and the Prater. On 6 November 1919 it was named after Heinrich Heine (1797–1856); before, it was Kaiser-Josef-Straße. On 9 December 1938 the Nazis renamed it Schönererstraße, and on 27 April 1945 it became Heinestraße again. The physicist Lise Meitner grew up at No. 27.
